Workshop and Class Descriptions

Dayna is a very generous and enthusiastic teacher. Her energy, information, and the atmosphere of her classroom is infectious. I would highly recommend any class she teaches. They are always packed full of idea's and information that is cutting edge from around the mix media world. You don't have to leave Salem to take first class mixed media classes. She is a wonderful and colorful Artist. She also is a kind and compassionate person.

Deirdra Doan, artist, illustrator, photographer

My hope is for you to share your knowledge and teach your classes forever long, because you are my lifeline to Creative Magic! Dawn

I’ve both taught and hired Dayna to teach at my own studio, and am looking forward to doing so again. I value her because as a teacher she is dynamic, encouraging and talented. But as someone responsible for organizing a regular schedule of events, I also appreciate her responsiveness, attention to details and dependability. I highly recommend Dayna; I definitely think she’d be an asset to DIY Lounge. Gretchin Lair, Scarlet Star Studios

NEW CLASS!! Think Outside the Tin

Create a beautiful pocket shrine using an altered Altoid tin. I’ll prepare your tin in advance, so it will be rusted and coated with a beautiful blue/green patina (it’ll look like it’s a 100 years old!). I’ll provide all of the materials you’ll need to create a beautiful, inspiring, and meaningful shrine. Items I’ll bring include fancy papers, collage images, glitter, jewels, charms, shells, bottles, rocks, game pieces, lace, ribbons, words, and a bountiful supply of objects from my personal stash.

NEW CLASS!! Bountiful Blocks

If you’re suffering from a bit of artist’s block, the solution just might be to do some art on blocks! For this class, you’ll be given three blocks of varying sizes and heights and with guided instruction, you’ll design mini collages on the five sides of each block (six sides if you want to decorate the bottom). After gluing down paper and images, you’ll be set free to add words, glitter, feathers, charms, and bits and bobs from my personal stash. Each block can be a stand alone piece of art, or you can choose a theme and group the blocks together – you can even stack them.

I loved all the choices of stuff, the helpful ideas, and all the time we were given to explore and create!! Wow! this class was more fun than I imagined! Thanks so much for another fun, playful class.

I love, love, love the new space! The colors, the feel, the friendliness; the variety of things to use, to see, to share. The entire experience was just what I needed. Three hours was a perfect amount of time to play and create.

NEW CLASS!! Create a Vision Board

Ready, set your intentions, GO! A vision board is a large collage of images and words that reflect who you want to be, goals and dreams you want to come true. By selecting specific images and words that represent your desires, you create a visual representation of the changes you want to occur in your life. I'll provide piles of magazines, a board to use as your substrate, and gobs of glue. You bring an open and willing spirit and let's play together.

I loved the class! I thought the time was perfect, the warm-ups good.... I am thrilled with what I came away with...It's so important, it's a tool I use all year long, so I love giving it such intense attention.

I loved the readings and stretching and I liked that the class was informal and personal.

Your class, as usual, was wonderful. The class left a lot of room for creativity within a focused environment.

Your class was just what the doctor ordered for my stressed out life! It allowed me to take a breath, get centered, and focus on the looming tasks at hand!

Fanciful Dream Houses

Fanciful Dream Houses are based on the idea of a nicho, a miniature shrine, traditionally used to contain relics or sacred objects, often used for household altars. For our purposes, we are going to make a fanciful little nicho, using a metal house-shaped box with a glass door, known as a Dream House. On the outside, we will add color using paint or alcohol inks. On the inside, we will add images, words, text, and photographs. There is room in the little house to add 3-D items such as charms or jewels. I will also bring transparencies so we can embellish the little glass door. The Dream Houses are designed to stand up or be hung, so I will bring charms for you to attach to the outside if you choose to hang your Fanciful Dream House. Come play with me!

I liked the tremendous encouragement, knowledge of materials, ability to help students at all different levels and genuine creativity.

I loved all of the multitudinous parts great selection! Receiving only positive feedback and encouragement was nice.

Excellent class - inspirational - too fun for words. Many opportunities to experience many products.

I can't tell you how much the whole class uplifted my soul through the afternoon! It gave me rest and inspiration - thank you so much for giving us this great experience to work and create. I was able to go back home in a better/stronger frame of mind - life felt good again and this came during the creation and how I changed the course of my house. Several things that amazed me at the class were, as always, the BRILLIANCE of everyone in making their dream house! And wow, what fantastic creative women!

Part I: Visual Journaling: A Life Collage

Create a Hand Bound Visual Journal

For Part I, we will be making an 8 x 10 hand bound journal. You will design and create the covers for your journal from a sheet of beautiful Thai Kozo paper, to which you will apply Adirondack ink using plain and textured brayers, and rubber stamps for added oomph. After creating this sheet of beautiful paper, I will walk you through the process to bind your journal, filling it with three signatures of a combination of special papers. Your finished journal will have 36 pages, which means you will have 72 pages to make art on!

You can stop here and walk away with a beautiful art journal, or, you can join us for Part II of Visual Journaling: A Life Collage – Let the fun begin! See details for Part II.

What a great class! I love my book! Thanks for your guidance on that journey - you do a grand job of herding us!

Your enthusiasm and encouragement was great.

I liked learning a new skill! The whole creative process was very satisfying and you offered great positive instruction.

Your journal-making class was amazing! Your patience and skills made the class very rewarding and the finished project was so polished and professional looking with each journal taking on the character and individuality of the creator. In addition to having a great end result, the day was inspiring -- what a great opportunity to work among other creative and bold women in a nurturing and non-judgmental environment . . . you took the fear out of it and I felt free to play and experiment boldly! Shelby

The whole class was wonderful. I liked the pacing ...very comfortable. You were always there to help and coach. Your instructions were clear. You made the class fun and informative.

Lots of patience and lots of help. You had a nice way of keeping some busy and not making others feel bad for not keeping up!

Perfectly timed, well explained and thought out. One of my favorite mastperieces to date. I am so very happy.

Part II: Visual Journaling: A Life Collage

Let the Fun Begin!

Take Part I of Visual Journaling: A Life Collage and create your own hand bound journal, or bring a store bought one and jump right in. For six weeks, I will lead you in a variety of exercises and prompts, allowing you to explore various art mediums in your visual journal. These techniques include, but are not limited to: collage, quotes, writing, paints, inks, stamping . . . you get the idea. I will not only lead you in a variety of techniques, I will also introduce you to different visual artists each week and we will experiment and try out some of their styles. We will silence our inner critic, encourage and cheer each other on, and just allow ourselves to play for three hours each week.

Here is what others had to say about the classes:

What I liked: The variety of techniques and medias. The fun samples, books, and the fabulous teacher. The interaction with the interesting women. The class was presented in such a freeing approach. Looseness and creativity seeped through!

This was a totally creative class in which we were free to express ourselves.

I loved taking a break from daily life to come here to play.

The positive atmosphere and flow of creative ideas made me feel alive!

You create wonderful energy with the people you bring together and the projects you organize for us.  Thank you! Dawn

It's the morning after the Visual Journaling class and as I sit here looking at my beautiful journal. I'm so appreciative for your willingness to be the creative guru in Salem. You may not be the only creative guru, but you have certainly found your way to making a difference for many of us in the Salem community.  Thanks for appearing in my life when I needed to explore my creative energy...you are a jewel! Susan

You were so patient and specific in your directions it made everything go smoothly. I loved having the opportunity to learn simple techniques that gave amazing results in a warm and supportive environment, these techniques were a springboard for my creativity. Working in a group made me feel good about myself and my art, it was great to come together with other women from varying backgrounds and finding the common denominator, a desire to get in touch with our creative core. I looked forward to my Thursday night out every week even when I was exhausted at the end of the day, the thought of it kept me going. I have a beautiful work of art to remind me of this place in my life, what's not to like about that? Your own creativity and artwork is inspiring, I love it! Shelby

Thank you for another great class! I keep learning so much both within and without - each class I would come home afterwards feeling to fresh. This enabled me to continue with my work week in a lighter/freer mood! I believe it enhanced my attitude at work for the best. Somehow the class, the creativity, takes the edges out of life. As always, it is just amazing and inspiring to watch and be a part of a great group of women. I loved the freedom to just be, to create, to accept, not to mention the use of all your cool stuff! Thanks again for all your guidance, encouragement, and for that journey that brought you here to us. Kathleen

Matchbox Shrines

Creating a small, personal shrine is a way to commemorate or acknowledge a feeling, goal, intention, memory, thought, idea, or even to focus on a special word or color. Shrines are meant to represent something personal and unique to you. In this workshop, you will be provided with two small matchboxes and all the materials you need to create a teeny, tiny personal shrine. Your shrine can be filled with objects that represent symbolism and meaning, or they can just be fun, filled with objects of surprise and delight.

Thanks again for the wonderful creative time. It was a great group of gals and just a wonderful time to create thanks to your talent, teachings, and all the great items to pick from.  Dawn

The women absolutely adored you and your project. You are a pleasure to work with. I think you are a great role model of living an abundant and joyful life. Elizabeth Hartshorn, MS, LPC, Full Circle Counseling

I took my mini shrines to work and the women squealed over them (my scared little girl artist was beaming with pride!) . . . I had such a great time – thanks for creating an environment where I could be brave enough to play.  Felicia

Itty Bitty Pretties

Experiment with paint, paper, ephemera, and doodads by making little 1.5 x 1.5 masterpieces. Chipboard squares are covered with collage papers, family photos, and then embellished with bits and pieces of found objects, shells, jewels, glitter – unlimited possibilities! Each little tile is a finished piece of art and when grouped together, you have a mini exhibit! I supply everything except your family photos (I can provide photos of strangers if you prefer!).

I enjoyed your workshop very much. You did a grand job as teacher . . . you were patient, helpful and encouraging and the class was a treat. And it was nice to walk away with some completed work at the end of the class so you have a sense of accomplishment.  Joni

The class was fun, easy and relaxed. The time flew by and for a non-creative person, I created something that I was proud of! Dayna's style is easygoing and informal, and that made it enjoyable for all of us attending!  Denise

That was the best class ever! I want to take it every time you offer it!

The class was orgasmic, no, better than orgasmic, it was post-orgasmic!

ArTfuL pLaY

Are you creative but don't consider yourself an artist? Are you an artist but in a slump? Do you sometimes look at the classes for children and wish they had something like that for adults? Well, this series of classes will satisfy your desire to be creative and artful in a playful, non-threatening setting. We won't be making fine art, but we will spark your creativity and have fun. Join Dayna for six weeks of creative exploration and experimentation. Be surprised each week by the following artful activities: Mask-making, blind contour and touch drawing, mandala records, embellishing a soft cloth doll, creating a life plague using paper clay, and Collage Up a Storm.

Loved that every week we had something different to do/experience. Dayna is so upbeat, encouraging, delightful . . . thanks for having her here. Cool stuff!

Dayna is a very generous and encouraging instructor.

The class was fantastic! I look forward to utilizing what I learned. The techniques were wonderful and it was fun to play and create!

My appreciation to you for having such a great class with such a mix of mediums for people like myself who are just 'dabblers' in life. I had a wonderful time.

I so appreciated your upbeat and encouraging attitude/demeanor - you are easy and comfortable to hang out with! I enjoyed the variety of porjects offered, the posting of our projects on your blog, the quotes and questions that made us think.

Collage Up a Storm

Various collage techniques will be used, depending upon Dayna's mood, but they include such collage styles as:

Create a mythical creature
Don't think, just do as you're told

Whatever techniques are used, you will start with your visual journal or a piece of canvas board and transform it into a personal piece of art. You will be guided through the process of creating a collage using a variety of papers, materials to create texture, images, and sometimes even embellishments to add dimension and interest.

What’s more fun than being in a space with the happy energy of people playing, the lilt of delightful music in the background, yummy eye candy all around, and letting your imagination run free. The Idiom Dictionary definition of “like a kid in a candy shop” is “A state of utter fascination, with many good or tempting things all around you. The Collage Up A Storm class experience was not only that, but also that of tasting the yummy candy too. It was much fun to experiment and play with so many products. Thank you, Dayna, for your generosity in sharing all of your goodies and giving just enough direction to get us flying on our own. Most of us clearly need to be taught how to let go and fly.

I loved this class. I like having no rules other than to just listen to you. Kind of reminded me about my two trips over to Europe when everything and everyday was planned by someone else.....all I had to do is wake-up and go for fun (it was like I was a kid again and not a Mom having to take care of everything!)....even the 2 inks in a row was fun!
