Workshops

I am pleased to announce that by request, I am planning to offer my Visual Journaling: A Life Collage class in September at Stampin’ Cat Studio. The format is different from the class I offered in the Spring, but I am excited about the format and definitely excited about the bright, large workspace that Lisa offers at Stampin’ Cat Studio. To register, contact Stampin’ Cat Studio at 503-390-2553.

Here are the details of the classes:

Part I: Visual Journaling: A Life Collage

Create a Hand Bound Visual Journal

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

5:30-9:30 pm

$40 (all supplies provided)

For Part I, we will be making an 8 x 10 hand bound journal. You will design and create the covers for your journal from a sheet of beautiful Thai Kozo paper, to which you will apply Adirondack ink using plain and textured brayers, and rubber stamps for added oomph. After creating this sheet of beautiful paper, I will walk you through the process to bind your journal, filling it with three signatures of a combination of Fabriano hot press 130-pound paper and Stonehenge paper in white and cream. Your finished journal will have 36 pages, which means you will have 72 pages to make art on! A blank sample journal is on display at Stampin’ Cat Studio.

You can stop here and walk away with a beautiful art journal, or, you can join us for Part II of Visual Journaling: A Life Collage – Let the fun begin! See details for Part II.

Part II: Visual Journaling: A Life Collage

Let the Fun Begin!

Tuesdays, September 9, 16, 23, 30, 2008

6:00-8:00 pm

$15 per class, or $55 for all four

Take Part I of Visual Journaling: A Life Collage and create your own hand bound journal, or bring a store bought one and jump right in. Each week, I will lead you in a variety of exercises and prompts, allowing you to explore various art mediums in your visual journal. These techniques include, but are not limited to: collage, quotes, writing, paints, inks, stamping . . .  you get the idea. I will not only lead you in a variety of techniques, I will also introduce you to different visual artists each week and we will experiment and try out some of their styles. We will silence our inner critic, encourage and cheer each other on, and just allow ourselves to play for two hours each week.

(The four sessions are designed so that you can come to any or all of the classes and participate for the evening.)

DIY LOUNGE

I have been accepted as a teacher at the DIY Lounge in Portland! The DIY Lounge has a workspace located in the back of the sweet little, but well-stocked, art store on Alberta, collage. I had to submit my application and supply a reference that could verify my art-teaching abilities. For my reference, I used my friend and mentor, Gretchin Lair of Scarlet Star Studios. She wrote such a nice tribute to my talents, that I share it with you here:

“I’ve both taught and hired Dayna to teach at my own studio, and am looking forward to doing so again. I value her because as a teacher she is dynamic, encouraging and talented. But as someone responsible for organizing a regular schedule of events, I also appreciate her responsiveness, attention to details and dependability. I highly recommend Dayna; I definitely think she’d be an asset to DIY Lounge.”

For more information or to register, visit the DIY Lounge website.

No workshops are currently scheduled at the DIY Lounge.

Workshop and Class Descriptions

"Dayna is a very generous and enthusiastic teacher. Her energy, information, and the atmosphere of her classroom is infectious. I would highly recommend any class she teaches. They are always packed full of idea's and information that is cutting edge from around the mix media world. You don't have to leave Salem to take first class mixed media classes. She is a wonderful and colorful Artist. She also is a kind and compassionate person."

Deirdra Doan, artist, illustrator, photographer.

Matchbox Shrines

Creating a small, personal shrine is a way to commemorate or acknowledge a feeling, goal, intention, memory, thought, idea, or even to focus on a special word or color. Shrines are meant to represent something personal and unique to you. In this workshop, you will be provided with two small matchboxes and all the materials you need to create a teeny, tiny personal shrine. Your shrine can be filled with objects that represent symbolism and meaning, or they can just be fun, filled with objects of surprise and delight.

"Thanks again for the wonderful creative time. It was a great group of gals and just a wonderful time to create thanks to your talent, teachings, and all the great items to pick from." Dawn

“The women absolutely adored you and your project. You are a pleasure to work with. I think you are a great role model of living an abundant and joyful life.” Elizabeth Hartshorn, MS, LPC, Full Circle Counseling

“I took my mini shrines to work and the women squealed over them (my scared little girl artist was beaming with pride!) . . . I had such a great time – thanks for creating an environment where I could be brave enough to play.”  Felicia

Itty Bitty Pretties

Experiment with paint, paper, ephemera, and doodads by making little 1.5 x 1.5 masterpieces. Chipboard squares are covered with collage papers, family photos, and then embellished with bits and pieces of found objects, shells, jewels, glitter – unlimited possibilities! Each little tile is a finished piece of art and when grouped together, you have a mini exhibit! I supply everything except your family photos (I can provide photos of strangers if you prefer!).

“I enjoyed your workshop very much. You did a grand job as teacher . . . you were patient, helpful and encouraging and the class was a treat. And it was nice to walk away with some completed work at the end of the class so you have a sense of accomplishment.”  Joni

“The class was fun, easy and relaxed. The time flew by and for a non-creative person, I created something that I was proud of! Dayna's style is easygoing and informal, and that made it enjoyable for all of us attending!”  Denise

Cigar Box Shrines

This is an expansion of the Matchbox Shrine workshop, applying the same principles only in a larger medium. A brief history of shrines is included and all supplies necessary for creating and assembling a Cigar Box Shrine.

Discovering Your Creative Self – The Artist’s Way (one-day option)

Give yourself the gift of learning to live an authentic and creative life. You will be introduced to the basic tools of Julia Cameron’s popular book, “The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity.” During the daylong workshop, you will learn the importance of cultivating a daily writing practice, how to fill your creative well, and develop a personal affirmation. You will be inspired to pursue or deepen your creative life and learn to silence your inner critic/censor. Through the use of writing exercises, small group activities, and art projects, you will leave motivated and ready to begin or expand your creative journey.

“I enjoyed the use of several learning styles . . . . good content, active, lots of laughing . . . enjoyed the motivation and encouragement . . . loved the topic and the exercises . . . Dayna had supplies to help with our projects and it was fabulous.” Anonymous comments by participants in this workshop

Visual Journaling: A Life Collage

Explore your world through the different mediums of memoir, journaling, poetry, painting, drawing, and collage. You will begin the creation of an art journal, using writing prompts, personal photographs, and memories, then embellish your pages with collage, painting, and drawing.
